We just came back from 3 weeks at El Rancho Evergreen, a 38 hectar guest ranch in the highlands of Chiapas, just 45 minutes outside San Cristóbal de las Casas. Time passes so fast when you’re in your element…
This was our third volunteer experience here in Mexico and we absolutely loved it! We were welcomed not only by the sweetest family who made us feel right at home, but also by 13 fabulous horses, 6 adorable dogs, 4 cuddly cats and many more furry/feathery friends…🐄🐓🐑🐀
Life at the ranch taught me many things. I truly realized the impact nature and animals have on my wellbeing, the energy they feed me and the pure joy I feel when I’m around them. I also realized the strain a mere one-day visit to town had on me, becoming aware of how sensitive to pollution, traffic and noise I actually am (well we all are, if we “detox” ourselves long enough to reconnect with our natural state). Last but not least I was amazed how fine I felt living in such a rustic, simple environment: we lived in a wooden cabin with a small outside shower (heated by fire or solar power) and no water pressure whatsoever (meaning I dreaded washing my hair, also because showering while being cold was already a feat by itself), outside dry toilets, wooden bunk beds, sleeping with mice 🐭 and a LOT of mud because of the rainy season… to name a few.
Not to speak of the horses… Falling asleep to the noise of them eating just outside your cottage and waking up to them greeting you as you open your window is priceless. I especially thank Kimbey and Augusta for having been such amazing teachers 🙏🏼
At first I was too scared of Augusta, a huge mare, to even take her out of her box. At the end she was my favorite and I spent hours having her follow me around like a dog and push her ginormous butt onto me, begging me to scratch her some more on her favorite spot 😅
As for Kimbey, he gave me the confidence to ride again and to experience my first crazy gallop trail ride through the forest 🐎🌲 without falling off (wohoo!). I still have a long way to go, and many dreams around horses, but will forever be thankful for all the wonderful moments spent with all these magical creatures 🙏🏼✨
Kimbey, my riding companion
Next up: Oaxaca for the Day of the Dead festivities 💀🎉 But first: enjoy a few calm days in and around San Cristóbal de las Casas.
Buenas noches amigos ❤️
