Becoming your own boss

Going from having a boss to becoming your own boss is not something you master as soon as you decide to take the leap. It’s an ongoing process. To me, this phrase says a lot about the magic of entrepreneurship:

“They did not know it was impossible, so they did it.” Mark Twain

Being an entrepreneur is a state of mind, it’s about cultivating certain beliefs and getting yourself into action. You need to learn to stop tormenting yourself, get into action, advance, learn, course-correct and start over.

To me, there are 4 keys to becoming your own boss:

  • ALIGNMENT: understand what it is that makes you happy, what you stand for, what warms your heart. It is that sacred fire that will make you get up in the morning with determination, and go to sleep at night with satisfaction.
  • CLARITY: become clear on what it is you want to do, have a long-term vision and set goals.
  • ACTION: you can envision and dream all you want. At the end of the day, the only thing that matters, is how much action you take. Speaking from experience, I recommend taking a step back and a moment to pause before plunging into action. As I like to tell my team: don’t hustle, align. You might just find more efficient and productive ways of getting where you want if you take the time to breathe and think instead of running all over the place.
  • MINDSET: To me, acquiring the right mindset is the hardest part of becoming your own boss. Working on your limiting beliefs and negative self-talk (more about that in this article) is the key to eradicating your blockages and self-sabotage mechanisms. And believe me, we all have beliefs that keep us from getting to where we really want.

After years of morning wake-up torture, today the thought of creating a better life for myself and for my family makes me get up with a smile on my face. As I said, magic does not happen over night, and being an entrepreneur does not mean you don’t doubt, fear, hesitate or pull your hair out every now and then. It just means you have decided to act despite the doubts, fear, hesitation and hair pulling. To me, the feeling of knowing that everything I get is directly

proportional to my personal efforts is the fairest, most deserving way of working. I’ve just had too many bosses who did not do the work themselves, handing it over to their teams while “working” from home themselves (yeah right, then why don’t you answer emails or your phone for that matter?).

I truly believe each and every one of us can become everything he wants to be. But it requires time and effort, which only few are ready to invest. That is the difference between those who live their dreams vs. those who are spectators of other people’s dreams. So stop watching and start taking action for yourself !

People often tell me “Wow, you are lucky to have had the courage to take the leap and successfully launch your own business.” Do you seriously think building your courage and confidence comes by a streak of luck?! People only see the tip of the iceberg. But getting there means a lot of hard work, tears, self-doubt and late nights. And they are just SO worth it. And even though there are still miles for me to go, I am loving every step of the way.

Be brave, be bold.

Love,

Ana xxx
